Apathy:

  1. The soundscape brings in many sounds very quickly, one of them being the piano which took me by surprise right away. I think since I had not heard the piano and a violin as well in other soundscapes it was refreshing to have this be a part of it. The feeling apathy is represented well in this soundscape. While there are many different instruments and noises occurring they do not last very long when they appear. Time in manipulated easily because of how long or in this case how short the appearance of the instruments and noises are. The instrument is introduced quickly and then taken away only to be brought back again shortly thereafter into the song. Space is manipulated in this soundscape through the use of the thunderstorm and wind sounds. These loops make it seem as if you are in a different space then wherever the sounds of the violin and screeching noise of what sounds like a door. Within this one soundscape it seems as if there are two different places being converged. This soundscape is definitely not boring but clearly represents the feeling of apathy because of the ability of the creators to use these musical elements artistically.

  2. At first I didn’t really think this soundscape gave off a feeling of apathy, but as I watched it a couple more times it dawned on me just how it does just that. What I imagine is someone sitting on a swing (at least that’s what I thought that squeaking sound was), and kind of watching the world go by. The sound of the wind howling gives a sense of space around the person. The way the piano loop only plays every now and then gives a sense of the time passing by. Later, when a violin begins to play the tune gives a sense of not caring that much, it was just a low hum added to the rest of the sounds. Another thing that helps with the feeling of apathy is something that didn’t really occur to me the first time. The fact that even when the thunder starts to play, there is no sense of urgency or fear, the sounds don’t change at all, the piano still plays every now and then and that little squeak still plays from time to time, it all just gives a feeling of generally not caring at all about what is going on in the world around you.
